Worldwide Emission Regulations

CRT filterSince the introduction of the Euro I standard in 1992 the targets have become increasingly demanding. Euro VI regulations, which will apply across Europe from January 2014 will limit PM emissions to 0.01 g/KWh compared with Euro I target of 0.36 g/KWh.

DPF's are essential to meet the Euro VI requirements and all new heavy-duty vehicles sold from 2014 will contain them as part of their exhaust after-treatment systems.

For more details on emissions regulations covering the EU, please visit the EU Europa website.  Many countries outside Europe are adopting standards based on the Euro limits; for example, the Euro IV targets are in the process of being introduced for Australia, Korea and Brazil.

Since the introduction of the EPA07 regulations in the United States in 2007, new heavy-duty diesel vehicles have been fitted with after-treatment systems including DPF's to meet demanding PM targets.  More than 2 million vehicles in the US are already fitted with DPF's. This number is increasing with the introduction of US EPA10 regulations.

For further information on the US EPA 07 and EPA 10 regulations, please visit the US EPA website.

The Euro V, EPA 07 and Japanese NLT have similar targets but the test cycles differ significantly in each territory, making direct comparisons difficult.  Many industry organisations, including vehicle manufacturers, have been promoting a more consistent international approach using a Worldwide Harmonised Test Cycle (WHTC) to standardise testing methods.
